Restoring and improving a portion of Kenthurst bushland – objective is to restore sections that have been gradually overrun by native Blady Grass and introduced weeds. A compounding problem has been the management of storm rain flows which have scoured out soil and contributed to the spread of weeds.

FIRST MEETING 2025 – Our first activity was organised by Linda Pine who, as many of you know, is our native food expert. She had laid out eight samples of vegetation to be matched with the dried powders which she creates to use as flavours in her recipes.

Plants in my Garden – Prostanthera scutellarioides looks stunning in spring, its purple flowers contrasting and eye-catching against the dark green foliage. The flowers last for several weeks.

Visit Fairfield Indigenous Flora Park – The Flora Park was created in response to a residents’ campaign more than 30 years ago. The event that sealed the decision was the discovery by Fairfield Garden Club members of several plants of Acacia pubescens growing on the site.

Some Memories of WA – May is not the time of year to visit WA if you want to see the famous wildflowers. However, the trip was not without some interesting plant life.

My Bunya adventures – Linda Pine collected some Bunya Pine cones from our Hills Council’s Bidjiwong Nursery, and had also been given a couple of dozen nuts from friends, which I then dehydrated and milled into flour. There was enough to make a cake with the flour, which turned out reasonably good.

Bushwalk Pyes Creek Cherrybrook – We saw tall and majestic Angophora costata, towering Turpentines, massive eucalypts, lots of Callicoma serratifolia and Ceratopetalum apetalum (Coachwood), wonderful Xanthorrhoeas and Lomandras, and large areas of ferns.

In the Parramatta-Hills Group of APS, the second Wednesday of most months finds a happy group of propagators gathered at the Hills Council nursery at North Rocks, north-west Sydney.
